The Cymbal Dance | Tribute to John Compton at 3rd Coast Tribal #zills
This performance holds a very special place in my heart. 💜
At 3rd Coast Tribal in 2013, we brought together a beautiful group of dancers to perform The Cymbal Dance, John Compton’s iconic finger cymbal choreography, as a tribute to John after his passing.
There was something incredibly powerful about putting this piece onstage with so many dancers, filling the room with the sound of our zills, and remembering John through a choreography that carries so much of his spirit. It is one of those performances that was about much more than the choreography itself.
And now, over a decade later, I’m bringing The Cymbal Dance back into the studio to share it with a new group of dancers.
Beginning September 23rd, I’ll be teaching the complete choreography in a special 9-week hybrid series. You can join me in person in Houston or learn with me live online from anywhere, with full class recordings included so you can continue practicing between classes and revisit the material for a full year.
We’ll dig into the movement, musicality, and zill patterns, as we explore what makes this choreography such a fun challenge to dance.
I would love to share the power and magic of this piece with you, and put a whole new generation of cymbal dancers onstage together. 💜
